I was at Douglas Aircraft in the early 80’s when several Ford executives, including Larry Sullivan came out to understand how the aerospace industry managed quality. We had a lengthy discussion regarding supplier quality. Ford was just starting to train their suppliers and since they were facing significant economic challenges, the suppliers had to pay to attend these sessions. The message was very direct. The suppliers had to take responsibility for the quality of the product. This was all happening during the launch of the Taurus/ sable, one of the most successful cars ever introduced.
