A Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt is a professional equipped with a sound understanding of the Lean Six Sigma methodology, capable of contributing to and leading focused improvement projects across various industries. Green Belts usually work in a part-time capacity on these projects while maintaining their regular job responsibilities. They play a vital role in supporting Black Belt-led projects and may also lead smaller-scale projects.
Green Belts are proficient in the DMAIC methodology – Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. Their training allows them to identify issues, collect data, assess processes, uncover root causes, and facilitate the implementation of effective solutions. They are skilled in project management, leveraging tools and techniques to coordinate team efforts and attain project objectives.
Lean Six Sigma Green Belts are trained in using statistical tools and software for data analysis and result interpretation. They are familiar with standard Six Sigma tools like process mapping, Pareto charts, cause-and-effect diagrams, and statistical process control charts to detect process variation and reduce defects.
Green Belts are also competent in applying Lean principles such as value stream mapping, 5S, and Kaizen to optimize processes, eliminate waste, and improve flow. They possess problem-solving skills and are trained in techniques like Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
Lean Six Sigma Green Belts at the Pyzdek Institute complete 100 hours of training (including homework assignments), pass a proctored, comprehensive, timed exam, and present a real-world project to a Pyzdek Institute certified Master Black Belt or Thomas Pyzdek himself.

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification is a valued qualification in the field of process improvement. The certification process is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Lean Six Sigma methodology, tools, and techniques, and to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge required to support and lead focused process improvement projects. Below, we will outline the process of becoming a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and the steps involved.
The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training is an extensive program designed to provide participants with a thorough understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles, methodologies, and tools. The training consists of a series of online modules that are completed in sequence. Each module includes a lesson, a quiz, and an assignment. The lessons were developed by Thomas Pyzdek, a renowned expert in the field, and are highly interactive. The quizzes are self-scoring, providing immediate feedback. Assignments must be submitted for grading by your instructor, a Pyzdek Institute certified Master Black Belt.
Once the training is completed, participants must pass a comprehensive proctored exam. The exam is open book and open notes, but it is proctored to authenticate the participant’s identity. The proctor will monitor the participant via webcam and microphone while they take the exam. Upon passing the exam, participants are awarded a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Silver certificate.
To receive full Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification, participants must complete a real-world project. The project will be reviewed and graded by a certified Master Black Belt. Participants will have access to project management software and tools to aid in their project work. The project will be completed in phases (DMAIC) and reviewed during Tollgate Reviews. Participants will receive feedback and guidance from their instructor throughout the project. Once the project is graded satisfactory, participants will make a live presentation to Thomas Pyzdek and their instructor for certification as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
Becoming a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt requires a commitment to training, study, and practical application. The certification process is designed to provide individuals with the skills and knowledge required to support and lead focused process improvement projects successfully. The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification is a valuable asset to any organization and can lead to increased career opportunities and advancement.
